Cravings
Cravings are powerful urges to eat particular food that you may have not previously desired. Whilst some women get such strong cravings that they are unable to relax or sleep until they have had that particular food, many do not get any at all. The most commonly reported cravings are for sweets, dairy products, spicy foods or unusual combinations of foods.
The exact reason why cravings are experienced is unknown. It could be that altered sensations of taste and smell in pregnancy affect food likes and dislikes. It has also been suggested that cravings happen in response to a temporary deficiency of specific nutrients.
Some women may develop a craving for non-food items such as soap, toothpaste or coal. This is known as ‘pica’ and is potentially very harmful if indulged. Several theories have been proposed as to what causes pica, from a deficiency of calcium or iron, to the ability of certain no-food items to ease nausea and vomiting. However, no medical reason has yet been determined.
Rather than develop a food craving, many women find that they suddenly go off certain foods and drinks such as coffee, alcohol and fried foods. This is often related to nausea, but may also be the body’s way of ensuring that they eat and drink wisely.
