Exercise

Sensible exercise in early pregnancy is good for circulation, relaxation and energy levels. It may also help ease pregnancy discomforts such as constipation and keep weight gain in check.

It is not a time to adopt a strenuous exercise regime. Exercises such as walking, gentle yoga and swimming are good. Most gyms and recreation centres run yoga or exercise classes designed for pregnancy taught by specially qualified instructors. However, if not attending a special pregnancy class, it is important to inform your instructor that you are pregnant as some specific exercises may need adapting. For example sit-ups are generally not recommended in pregnancy and you may be more prone to injury when stretching due to the extra release of the hormone relaxin.
